We ask the boys to stamp their mark on a game from the first whistle. Something told me pre kick off that they weren't firing today and it showed when Guisborough stormed ahead with 4 tries in the first 20 minutes.
We were sluggish around the ruck, slow with our line speed and consequently tackles were being missed. We had a fair amount of possession, and there were some great individual runs, but we were losing ball in contact which is unusual for us. Guisborough are really good around the ruck, and have some fast and powerful runners and due to still being in our sleeping bags for the first quarter, they steamed ahead.
However, the game changed 5-10 minutes before half time, and the team came out with more typical fire after the break. The lads really moved up a gear, and became more physical and dominant around the breakdown. We put their attack under some pressure, forcing mistakes and preventing ball getting to their speedsters. Some great tries scored by Riley Harris, Olly, Elliot, Jacob Reid and Riley Guy got us right back into the game before Guisborough’s frustration turned into a horrible tackle on Riley Harris, and some retaliation by our lads.
Afterwards, there was some niggles on both sides which ultimately led to the match being ended early. Some indiscipline on both sides spoilt what was an aggressive game, but a great challenge too. At this time, Bishop were on the ascendancy and there was only one score in it.
A great 2nd half performance by the team, who knows what the score board would have looked like if we'd turned up at the first whistle, or had completed the game.
Riley Guy was player of the match for having a great match at 10, and his second try in two matches which have been so creative in kicking through and gathering to score. Well done lads!
