The lads put in a strong performance at Hartlepool OB today. It was our first game since mid December, and we were a little rusty in patches, but you couldn't fault the lads commitment and enthusiasm, although you'd be forgiven for thinking they'd lost in the end such is the benchmark they've set themselves around performance.
We wanted to get off to a good start today against a large and physical team. Hartlepool have improved massively since the start of the season and they provided a stern test around the scrum and ruck. But the lads were right up for it, winning lots of ball, pushing Hartlepool off their own ball, and making lots of territory with strong and dynamic go forward.
We were rusty with some of our tackling, often going too high, and letting some of their bigger carriers time to build momentum. A very strong first half performance was completed by some great tries by Leo Ward, Olly Swords-Lee, Elliot Hobbs , Oliver John and a fantastic team try scored by Ben Shaw after the backs had passed the ball along the line into space.
Second period was a more evenly matched half with both teams scoring tries as legs got heavier.
Leo Ward captained the team for the first time and showed true leadership qualities, going forward he'll be added to our fantastic leadership group.
I'm getting the captain each week now to nominate a player of the match, this week Leo agreed with the coaches that Elliot had his best game of the season so far! So strong going forward, committed around the breakdown and fierce in defence. He's playing out of position too, hasn't moaned about it, just gets on and is happy to help the team, well done Elliot.
So things to build on, but so many positives to draw from this performance!
