This misty morning started with an impeccably observed minute silence for the young girl who sadly lost her life in an incident with a vehicle at Kendal Rugby Club.
Shortly afterwards, the sun broke and the action commenced as these two teams clashed in this eagerly awaited encounter. Westoe are good opponents, and they set a very stern challenge for the Bishop U10’s.
Before the match, we talked about the importance of teamwork, good defence, hard work at the ruck, passing, and importantly looking after the ball.
The first challenge we faced was the big Westoe ball carrier’s and their ball ripping strengths. On several occasions early on Westoe forced their way forwards as we struggled to bring down their hard running players. However, the players gathered themselves and after a few words of advice from our coaches they strengthened their resolve in the tackle and shored up the Bishop defence.
There were a few occasions we lost the ball as we went into contact. Something that we will be working hard on in training!
Our attacking play was good as we kept driving forward at the Westoe lines. Our players scored some great Try’s that always kept us ahead of our opponents which was great to see. However, our passing game could have been better. We need to give ourselves space, not crowd, and use space and the passing we have been practicing to pass the ball which will present more scoring opportunities for everyone.
This was a close affair against a good team who never gave up and showed good determination to break through the Bishop defence. The Bishop performance was very good, but we need to keep up the hard work in training on the key areas of defence, passing, commitment in the ruck, and improving our control and grip on the ball in contact.
Players of the week.
Theo Collinson. Some great tackles and good commitment in the ruck from Theo. His support play was good and he made some strong runs forward carrying the ball. He also scored a memorable try as he surged through the Westoe defence. Well played Theo.
Hylton Millward-Brearley. Hylton’s commitment in the ruck set a very good example to his team. He was always looking to secure the ball in contact and pass to teammates when opportunities arose. Great teamwork Hylton.
Harry Dodds. Harry really worked hard for his team on both sides of the ball. His defence and commitment in the ruck was very effective. In attack he made some great runs with the ball and scored a couple of fantastic tries. Well done Harry.
On Wednesday at 6:15pm we return to outdoor training! Hopefully as many players as possible can attend, there’s plenty to keep working on. Next Sunday, training at 10am.
Thank you for your continued support.
